Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem

All the praises are to Allaah, we praise Him, seek His Aid and ask His Forgiveness. May the peace and blessings and salawaat be upon His slave and Messenger Muhammad – Sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, his house of kin and companions and all who follow them exactly until the Day of Judgement.

والدَّليلُ الرَّجَاءِ قَولهُ تعالى

Wad-daleelur-rajaa’i qawluhu Ta’Aalaa:
And the proof for the hope is the saying of Allaah Ta’Aalaa:

   قُلْ إِنَّمَا أًناْ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ أَنَّمَآ إِلَـٰهُكُم إِلَـٰهٌ وَحِدٌ فَمَن كَانَ يَرجُواْ لِقَآءَ رَبِّهِ فَليَعمَل عَمَلاً صَـٰلِحًا وَلَا يُشرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبّه أَحَدَا

Say (O Muhammad): “I am only a man like you. It has been revealed to me that your Ilâh (God) is One Ilâh (God — i.e. Allâh). So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.” [Surah Al-Kahf 18:110]

Hope is like du’aa in that there are two types: one that is an act of worship and one that is not.  The proof for the hope that is NOT an act of worship is found in 24/60 which means:  And as for women past child-bearing who do not expect wed-lock, it is no sin on them if they discard their (outer) clothing in such a way as not to show their adornment. But to refrain (i.e. not to discard their outer clothing) is better for them. And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower. [An-Noor 24:60]

  • Here “expect” is in the sense of hoping.   If they gave their hope for marriage is that considered to be directing an act of worship to the marriage?  No it is not because it is not a hope in something that is exclusively Allaah’s.

The author continued:

والدَّليلُ التَّوكُلِ قَولهُ تعالى

Wad-daleelut-tawakkuli qawluhu Ta’Aalaa:
And the proof for the tawakkul is the saying of Allaah Ta’Aalaa:

وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَتَوَكَّلُوٓاْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤمِنِينَ

and put your trust in Allâh if you are believers indeed.” [Al-Ma`idah 5:23]

An important issue about At-Tawakkul ->  It is only an act of worship and is not if two types like du`aa’.  This is because 1) there is no daleel of tawakkul not being an act of worship and 2) if we consider carefully the definition of tawakkul we would find that it involves something exclusively Allaahs –  His will and creating.

The precise definition of At-Tawakkul is: The reliance of the heart on Allaahs will and creating of the outcomes along with doing the means and reasons.

From the previous definition we notice that tawakkul has to do with Allaah’s will and His creating.  Anything you want does not happen unless Allaah wills it then creates it and anything you want has to have its means and reasons.  For example:  If you want to gain beneficial knowledge you have to do the means and reasons for that while having tawakkul in Allaah.  From the means and reasons for that are: Seeking it, studying, making sincere intention, attending class, taking notes, listening and paying attention with an open heart, revising, applying the knowledge,  memorizing,  being patient, having good manners with the teacher, being consistant, work hard, make du`aa’, Starting with the most important which is At-Tawheed, etc… and these are the many means and reasons to gaining beneficial knowledge.

To better understand tawakkul we should know that part of tawakkul is doing the means and reasons, but not relying on them.  How is this?  It is that you do the means and reasons with your body parts and hope with your heart that Allaah wills them to bring about the outcome and creates it.

THERE IS A PRNCIPLE WHICH STATES:  Relying on the means is an act of shirk (lesser shirk) and leaving them is a deficiency/shortcoming in your Islaam –  and Tawakkul is to do neither of the two –  don’t rely on the means and don’t leave them

So Tawakkul is doing the means while relying on Allaah to make them work.

An example of relying on the means:  If you rely on any of the means and reasons for gainin beneficial knowledge as stateds above, you have not relied on Allaah’s Will but you have relied on the means –  they are the cause of the outcomes but this is only by the permission of Allaah and His creating the outcomes.

Another example:  If someone is waiting for his monthly pay, the issue of the will of Allaah and His Creating slipped his mind for the moment and he was depending on the work (the means) to put his salary in the account. This was relying on the means and reaqsons –  this is a minor shirk.  In everything that we do, we should not put our hopes in the means but rather cling our hopes in Allaah and on his Will and creating –  not in the means.

Hasn’t there been a time when you were the only one in the house who got a cold and nobody else in your household came down with it.  Or if Someone you are close to was ill with a cold and you were very close with them , hugging or kissing them (like your little child for example) and yet you never got the illness.  This is because Allaah Ta’Aalaa did not will that you get infected.  This shows you that it is Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’Allaa who moves about the means and reasons –  He created them and He created the outcomes of them.

For Everything happens by the will of Allaah and the means dont act by themselves without the will of Allaah –  therefore we should put out reliance in Allaah and not those means and reasons.

Or how is it that a person will know the book inside and out and feel so confident that they will ace an exam because they have done all the means and reasons and know the informationso well, but then when they get to the exam they don’t recall anything and are unable to answer a question!    Allaah is showing such a one that it is not by his ability without the will of Allaah.  Allaah is the one who created the ability in you and He is the one who will make this ability bring about its outcomes.  Itall goes back to –  is linked –  to the will of Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’Aalaa.

IMPORTANT POINT:  When we talk about tawakkul we are talking about a certain kind of reliance –  which is different than the broad meaning of depending.  It does not have an equivelence in English meaning because it is a special kind of reliance –  a reliance of the heart on something exclusively Allaahs –  His will and creating of the outcomes.

Depending is general and tawakkul is specific.  Since it is a specific kind of reliance it is not of two types.  It is only considered an act of worship because it involves something exclusively Allaahs –  His will and creating the outcomes.  This does not mean that Allaah didn’t make in the means and reasons the ability to bring aboiut the outcomes.  It only means that the means and outcomes are only based upon Allaahs will.  If Allaah wills that they do it they do it and if He wills that they don’t they don’t!

An example of this is found in 21/69 which means:  We (Allâh) said: “O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrâhim (Abraham)!”

Does fire burn?  Yes it does.  So fire is the means and the outcome is the burning.  The means bring about the outcome.  But this depends on the will of Allaah –  that is why Allah told the fire in the aayah above:  Dont burn be cool and safe!  Dont bring your outcome – but be cool and dsafe for Ibrahim.

You cant say “I tawakkul in myself”  for if you do that means you surrender yourself to other than Allaah and the Rasool said in the du`aa’:  …Laa Takilni ilaa nafsee tarfata `ayn (Do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye).   So say you trust in Allah and you do what you are told.

You want to enter Jannah- and the means are the good deeds –  so if you do the deeds without depending and relying on them –  but then you hope in Allaah that He makes those deeds a reason for you to enter into Paradise.  Likewise you should not say “I can’t!”   – rather you have to start with the means and reasons –  if you say you can’t you are surendering yourself to yourself!   You would never know if you can or not if you dont try to do anything, if you dont try to do the means !  You have to do the means and think good of Allaah and Allaah will aid you.  You take one step to Allaah and Allaah doubles the step!  You do the reasons and make present in your heart the call to Allaah to make those means and reasons to bring about their outcomes.

Allaah is able to make you of the people of understanding- in a month, six months –  however He wants to –  so we should not surrender ourselves to ourselves and say we cannot do something –  cannot memorize or gain the beneficial knowledge we are seeking –  rather we surrender to Allaah and rely on him to bring about the outcomes while we are doing the means and reasons.  Just as the birds go out leaving their nests with trust in Allaah and return with full bellies.  Just as food is privision of the body, knowledge is the provision of the soul.
