Establishing the Principles: Creed – Book 1- Class 7

Our teacher began with praising Allaah and sending salaat and salaam on the Messenger of Allaah, his family, companions and followers until the Last Day and began:

 NOTES >>>

So far we have taken the introduction, the muqadamah, and so far this introduction, the two verses we have taken so far point out that the words of our rightly guided predecessors are brief in wording and deep in meaning and it is unlike the late ages.  In these late ages (after the first four hundreds/three hundreds) there is plenty of speech and very little meaning.

So he who ponders on the old books finds it very easy to understand and very straight to the point and has no confusion, philosophy or any talk that is useless in it.

Our Teacher advised us that if there is any translation that we read Ibnu Rajab Al Hanbali’s book which is Fadhlu I’lmis Salaf A’lal Khalaf فضل علم السلف على الخلف   and it is (The Superiority Of The Predecessors Words Over The Ones Who Have Come After Them) and he was of the 8th century.

What is the word “salaf?”

This word was abused a lot in those days because of the misuse of it by many people.

Salaf is a word given to anything that has come before or preceded you.

Allah says in (43:56) :

And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. (56)

Allah also says in (4:22):

وَلَا تَنكِحُوا مَا نَكَحَ آبَاؤُكُم مِّنَ النِّسَاءِ إِلَّا مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَمَقْتًا وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا

And marry not women whom your fathers married, except what has already passed; indeed it was shameful and most hateful, and an evil way. (22)

It was Proven in Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree that the Prophet (Sallahu A’layhi Wassalam) said to his daughter Fatima (Radhiya Allahu A’nhaa) :

نِعْمِ السَّلَف اَنَا لَكِي

I am the best preceding example to you

The word Salaf is a correct word/term and it was used by all of the scholars after and even the deviated Scholars.  This term (Salaf) was given a technical term/meaning, so there are two meanings to this word. There is a linguistic meaning and a technical meaning.

THE LINGUISTIC MEANING – It is anything that has come before/preceded whether it is an  object, a meaning or anything.

THE TECHNICAL MEANING – It is the three generations starting from the Prophet’s -sallallaahu`alayhi wasallam.

–         Who are the companions – Sahaba (صحابة )

–         Their follower – At’tabi’oon (التابعون)

–         Their Followers –  Thabi’oo At T’abi’een.

And the proof for the above is mentioned in a hadeeth : The prophet (Sallahu A’layhi Wassalam) said : “The best people are those of my time then those after them then those after them.”

Scholars also said that the word Salaf is used technically for all the scholars which have passed away but this is  mostly used to express the first three generations.

Un bruef, This word (Salaf) technically is mostly used for the first three generations and some scholars broaden the circle and sometimes want to include some people who came after.

In (9:100) Allah says:

And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success. (100)

–         In this verse Allah ordered us to follow them in their way and He (Subhanahu wataa’la) is fully pleased with those who follow them exactly as to what is apparent with the word Ihsaan.

–         As’Saabiqoon are the foremost to enter Islam.

–         Muhajireen are those who have migrated from Makkah to Medina

–         The ansar are those who were in medinah and the ones who received the muhajiroon

–         Both the Muhajiroon and the Ansar are the companions of the prophet.

Our main point in the above verse is Allah’s saying –  وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَانٍ and the word Ithhaba’a (اتَّبَعَ) is on the scale of Ifta’ala (اِفتَعَلَ) and this we would learn in sarf Inshallah.

The word اتَّبَعُوهُم means they followed them.(the companions)

The word بِإِحْسَانٍ means with Ihsaan {the ba here gives the meaning of accompanying}

بِإِحْسَانٍ means اِتْقَان

Ihsaan is taken from the word اَحْسَنَ and this is from بَاب الإِفْعَالا  which we have already taken   أَفْعَلَ,يُفْعِلُ,إِفْعَالاً

So it is أَحْسَنَ , يُحْسِنُ , إِحْسَانا

So here Allah is pleased with those who have followed the companions exactly.

The three sources of evidence are:

–         The Qur’aan

–         The Sunnah

–         The Companions (Ijmaa’ah) because they are the ones who have understood the religion correctly. So this is the best way of following the religion.

So if you want the right way, in following the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet Salallaahu ‘alayhi wasalam and you are wondering who to follow in those who are differing in Islaam. Then this is your answer, only in this verse, if you think carefully about this verse and put your mind to it – ask yourself this question; What does Ihsaan mean? What does radiallaahu ‘anhu mean?  Allaah is telling you the answer right here: If you follow the Companions of the Prophet salallaahu alayhi wasalam exactly then Allaah will be pleased with you and Allaah has prepared for you heavens in which rivers flow and that is the most success. Allaah subhaanahu wa ta’ala also announced this in other verses as well.  Just to remind you of the verse in Surah an-Nisaa’, Ayah 115:   Allaah says:

وَمَن يُشَاقِقِ الرَّسُولَ مِن بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْهُدَىٰ وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِ مَا تَوَلَّىٰ وَنُصْلِهِ جَهَنَّمَ  وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا

And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad ) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers’ way. We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell – what an evil destination. (115)

In opposition it means that we shouldn’t oppose the Messenger and and should follow the way of the believers.   Allah says that if we do two things we will be exposed to the hell fire, what is it?

  1. Oppose the Messenger.
  2. Choose other than the way of the believers.

According to this verse, if we want to be saved from the hellfire, then we should follow the Messenger AND with that there is something else – as everyone states he follows the messenger and gives the interpretation that he desires or serves his purpose. But here to make the straight path clear, there is something else we should do to make the straight path clear which is following the way of the believers.

Who are the believers?

The verse was revealed at the time of the companions so they are those who we have to follow and it is an announcement to those who do not follow them. This alone is a merit to them, which has been sent down as a verse in their own time.

Imagine if Allaah sent down a verse praising you and announcing that whoever does not follow you is not rightly guided! So this verse is an announcement, that whoever does not follow them: those who are following the prophet salallaahu alayhi wasalam, those whom Allaah has chosen to take directly from the prophet salallaahu alayhi wasalam. Those whom Allaah has chosen to convey the religion which the Messenger has conveyed to the -for the people after them. Those are the people of the correct understanding of the religion. All their understanding has been written and recorded and has been kept safe until today and have been saved n the hearts of scholars until today. The scholars were teaching their way from the very beginning until this time and until Allaah subhaana wa ta’ala chooses and wills.  So if we want to know the right way from the wrong way, we ask ourselves three questions:

  1. Where is the proof from the Quran?
  2. Where is the proof from the Sunnah?
  3. Where is the proof of the companions and those who followed them?

Other than (those three) above should not be followed.
