Establishing the Principles: Arabic – Sarf – Book 1 – Class 46

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Our teacher began with praising Allaah and sending salaat and salaam on the Messenger of Allaah, his family, companions and followers until the Last Day and began:

Continuing on the third type of verbs which the second Chapter is a Qiyaas to:

Every verb which is both مُضَعَّف and   لاَزِم

Before in the first chapter we spoke about the Muda’af which is Muta’add, like for example رَدَّ – يَرُدُّ

And the Mudaari’ was originally يَردُدُ – Here the dhammah of the first daal was given to the vacant raa before it  يَرُددُ – And this is how we ended up merging the two identical letters (first became silent and second mutaharrik) يَرُدُّ – This dhammah which is given to the raa was taken from the first daal which is ‘aynul kalimah- The reason that it has a dhammah is because it belongs to chapter one فَعَلَ – يَفعُلُ

Here in Chapter two the ‘ayn in the Mudaari’ doesn’t have a dhammah, but a kasrah فَعَلَ – يَفعِلُ

تَبَّ – يَتبِبُ The kasrah which is on the first baa (‘aynul kalimah), is going to be moved from ‘aynul kalimah to faa-ul kalimah- And this time faa-ul kalimah is going to have a kasrah instead of a dhammah يَتِببُ – Now we are able to merge the two identical letters  يَتِبُّ

This is why we say in every Mudaari’ here يَتِبُّ and the likes (giving faa-ul kalimah a kasrah)- And this is the difference between the muda’af of Chapter one and Chapter two.

So we say:

غَبَّ – يَغِبُّ

فَرَّ – يَفِرُّ

أَطَّ – يَئِطُّ

خَفَّ – يَخِفُّ

And what we did in the conjugations with the Maadh and the Mudaari’ in Chapter one we do the same here

Conjugation of the Maadhee

When the verb is مُضَعَّف لاَزِم

(using different verbs)

فَعَلتُ                                                        فَرَرتُ

فَعَلنَا                                                          ضَلَلنَا

فَعَلتَ                                                       ضَلَلتَ

فَعَلتِ                                                        فَرَرتِ

فَعَلتُمَا                                                       غَبَبتُما

فَعَلتُم                                                        حَلَلتُم

فَعَلتُنَّ                                                        فَرَرتُنَّ

فَعَلَ                                                             حَقَّ

فَعَلَتْ                                                        حَقَّتْ

فَعَلاَ                                                              فَرَّا

فَعَلَتَا                                                            فَرَّتَا

فَعَلُوا                                                           ضَلُّوا

فَعَلنَ                                                          فَرَرنَ

When it is attached to a dhameeru raf’ mutaharrik and laamul kalimah get silenced we unmerge



Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 فَفَرَرْتُ مِنكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِي رَبِّي حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

“So I fled from you when I feared you. But my Lord has granted me Hukman (i.e. religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood), and appointed me as one of the Messengers. [26:21]

  • فَرَرتُم



Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 وَقَالُوا أَإِذَا ضَلَلْنَا فِي الْأَرْضِ أَإِنَّا لَفِي خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ بَلْ هُم بِلِقَاءِ رَبِّهِمْ كَافِرُونَ

And they say: “When we are (dead and become) lost in the earth, shall we indeed be recreated anew?” Nay, but they deny the Meeting with their Lord! [32:10]

  • One of the meanings ضَلَّ has is: he became lost – That is why the thing which you lost is called  ضالَّة , like in the hadeeth mentioned:

أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ أَبِي الْمَعْرُوفِ الْمِهْرَجَانِيُّ بِهَا ، حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْحَذَّاءُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمَدِينِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ كَثِيرِ بْنِ أَفْلَحَ ، قَالَ : ” كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ لِلرَّجُلِ إِذَا أَضَلَّ شَيْئًا ، قُلِ : اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ الضَّالَّةِ ، هَادِيَ الضَّالَّةِ ، تَهْدِي مِنَ الضَّلَالَةِ ، رُدَّ عَلَيَّ ضَالَّتِي بِقُدْرَتِكَ وَسُلْطَانِكَ مِنْ عَطَائِكَ وَفَضْلِكَ


  • ضَلَلتِ , حَقَقتِ , تَمَمتِ



  • حَلَلتُمَا , حَقَقتُمَا , فَرَرتُما



Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 وَإِذَا حَلَلْتُمْ فَاصْطَادُوا

But when you finish the Ihram (of Hajj or ‘Umrah), you may hunt …. [5:2]


Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَآتَيْنَا كُلَّ نَفْسٍ هُدَاهَا وَلَـٰكِنْ حَقَّ الْقَوْلُ مِنِّي لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ

And if We had willed, surely! We would have given every person his guidance, but the Word from Me took effect (about evil-doers), that I will fill Hell with jinn and mankind together.  [32:13]


Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 كَذَٰلِكَ حَقَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ فَسَقُوا أَنَّهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Thus is the Word of your Lord justified against those who rebel (disobey Allah) that they will not believe (in the Oneness of Allah and in Muhammad  as the Messenger of Allah). [10:33]


  • تَبَّا , غَبَّا



Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا تَغْلُوا فِي دِينِكُمْ غَيْرَ الْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا أَهْوَاءَ قَوْمٍ قَدْ ضَلُّوا مِن قَبْلُ وَأَضَلُّوا كَثِيرًا وَضَلُّوا عَن سَوَاءِ السَّبِيلِ

Say (O Muhammad ): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Exceed not the limits in your religion (by believing in something) other than the truth, and do not follow the vain desires of people who went astray in times gone by, and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the Right Path.” [5:77]

Conjugation of the Mudaari’

When the verb is مُضَعَّف لاَزم

أَفعِلُ                                                           أضِلُّ

نَفعِلُ                                                              نَفِرُّ

تَفعِلُ                                                              تَفِرُّ

تَفعِلِينَ                                                          تَفِرِّينَ

تَفعِلاَنِ                                                          تَفِرَّانِ

تَفعِلُونَ                                                        تَفِرُّونَ

تَفعِلنَ                                                          تَفرِرنَ

يَفعِلُ                                                              يَفِرُّ

تَفعِلُ                                                             تَئِطُّ

يَفعِلاَنِ                                                          يَفِرَّانِ

تَفعِلاَنِ                                                          تَفِرَّانِ

يَفعِلُونَ                                                        يَفِرُّونَ

يَفعِلنَ                                                          يَفرِرنَ



Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 قُلْ إِن ضَلَلْتُ فَإِنَّمَا أَضِلُّ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِي وَإِنِ اهْتَدَيْتُ فَبِمَا يُوحِي إِلَيَّ رَبِّي إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ قَرِيبٌ

Say: “If (even) I go astray, I shall stray only to my own loss. But if I remain guided, it is because of the Inspiration of my Lord to me. Truly, He is All-Hearer, Ever Near (to all things).” [34:50]


Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 قُلْ إِنَّ الْمَوْتَ الَّذِي تَفِرُّونَ مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ مُلَاقِيكُمْ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

Say (to them): “Verily, the death from which you flee will surely meet you, then you will be sent back to (Allah), the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will tell you what you used to do.” [62:8]


Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

That Day shall a man flee from his brother, [80:34]


The fourth type of verbs which this Chapter is a Qiyaas to:

Every verb, where the Faa-ul Kalimah is a Waaw, with the condition that the laam isn’t one of the six letters throat letters حُرُوفُ الحَلق


Vocabulary :


It became obligotary / it/he fell

  • Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 فَإِذَا وَجَبَتْ جُنُوبُهَا فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْقَانِعَ وَالْمُعْتَرَّ

Then, when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat thereof, and feed the beggar who does not ask (men), and the beggar who asks (men). [22:36]

  • وَلَدَتِ المَرأةُ



He preached

  • Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 قَالُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْنَا أَوَعَظْتَ أَمْ لَمْ تَكُن مِّنَ الْوَاعِظِينَّ

They said: “It is the same to us whether you preach or be not of those who preach. [26:136]
