Establishing the Principles: Monotheism – Book 1- Class 8

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Our teacher began with praising Allaah and sending salaat and salaam on the Messenger of Allaah, his family, companions and followers until the Last Day and began:

We said in the previous class that As-Sabr is of three types:

  • Sabr by Allah
  • Sabr for Allah
  • Sabr with Allah

We spoke about the levels of people with sabar – patience and trails.

Today In shaa Allah we would like to share what ibn ul Qayyim said regarding those three types of sabr meaning which is Sabr by Allah, Sabr for Allah, Sabr with Allah. (Just for extra clarification and for the sake of knowing what the great scholars said about this).

So ibn ul Qayyim said in his book Madarij-jus-salikeen, “ The patience is of three types : Patience by Allah, Patience is for Allah, Patience with Allah. So, the first is Al Istia’anatu bihi meaning seeking his aid, and the vision of Him making you patient, and that the slaves patience is by his Lord not from himself, as Allah said in Surah An-Nahl ( number 16) verse 127, And endure you patiently (O Muhammad), your patience is not but from Allah.” Meaning if he didn’t make you patient, you wouldn’t be.”

The second one: that the thing driving (the individual) to being patient is the love of Allah and wanting His face (i.e. to reach to paradise to see His face), and seeking the nearness To Him, Not showing off the strength of oneself. And wanting praise from the creation, and other than that of the different reasons.

The third: the slave’s circulating with the religious want of Allah from him, and with his religious decrees, making himself patient with it, following how it goes, residing where it lays, he moves with it towards wherever it’s leads head, and he settles down where its types settled, so this is the meaning of him being patient with Allah.

Meaning: the devoted himself to His commandments and loved acts, and it is the toughest types of patience and its hardest, and it is the patience of As-siddeeqeen.”

This  means that imagine the commands are on a circle and a slave is circulating or moving around a circle and go around different stations (commands) like Hajj, Salah, Fasting, Zakah, being good with parents, keeping family ties , being good to your wife etc. All of these are acts of worship and commandments of Allah. For example: Pleasure of Allah rests where giving out obligatory charity. So you are going to imagine that you should reside there and do the duty of charity. Lets say they are riding tools (like taking a bus to head towards bus station)that head towards that station and you are going to, do not only commandments but also follow proper means that lead you to that commandments.

Therefore, if you are being tested by Allaah and if you are patient at it then as Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe Wasallam said , “ If Allah loves someone than He will test him”.  In Surah 4 verse 27 ,Allah wishes to accept your repentance, but those who follow their lusts, wish that you (believers) should deviate tremendously away from the Right Path.”

Because Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasallam said, “The slave keeps on walking on this earth being inflicted with trails until he meets Allah with no sin in his back.” This is authentic Hadeeth.

Imagine all the things that you do, that you know are wrong and after you do that and think about the things wrong you do and you are not aware of. That is why Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasallam used to say, “And We you’re your forgiveness for that which we do not know”. Because, sometimes you do something wrong unknowingly or heedlessly, not realizing what you did. All of this is cleansing your sins so that you would meet Allah on Day of Judgment with no sins on your back.

Allah said in Surah 29, verse 2: Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: “We believe,” and will not be tested.”

اعلم ـ أرشدك الله لطاعته

Know! May Allaah guide you to obey Him.’

اعلمMeans “know and acknowledge this word is said when the instructor is about to tell you something very important. So he uses this word,” اعلم “. This word is used before the most important things as Allah said in many verses as Allah said in Surah 5 verse 98,  Know that Allah is Severe in punishment and that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

And Allah said in Surah 65 verse 12,  It is Allah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allah has power over all things, and that Allah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge.”

And in Surah Mohammad verse 19,

“فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِك…..

‘So know (O Muhammad   صلى الله عليه و سلّم) that Lâ ilâha ill-Allâah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâah), & ask forgiveness for your sin……’

ملّة إبراهيم: أن تعبد الله وحده مخلصـًا له الدين أن الحنفية

Al Haneefiyyah, and Al Haneef (are mentioned in Qur’aan like in Surah 16, verse 120- 123,Verily, Ibrahim (Abraham) was an Ummah (a leader having all the good righteous qualities), or a nation, obedient to Allah, Hanifa (i.e. to worship none but Allah), and he was not one of those who were Al-Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and those who joined partners with Allah).”   121. (He was) thankful for His (Allah’s) Graces. He (Allah) chose him (as an intimate friend) and guided him to a Straight Path (Islamic Monotheism, neither Judaism nor Christianity ).122. And We gave him good in this world, and in the Hereafter he shall be of the righteous.123. Then, We have inspired you (O Muhammad   saying): “Follow the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism – to worship none but Allah) and he was not of the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers, etc.).”

Here in verse 120 two interpretations of Ummah are mentioned (i.e a leader having all the good righteous qualities, or a nation) and this is because both don’t contradict. He is a leader and at the same time he is nation by himself.

Haneef is taken from the Arabic word Hanaf حنف which means tilting.

That is why one of the Salaf was called ‘Al-Ahnaf’. Why is he called ‘Al-Ahnaf?’ Because he is bow-legged. So whoever is bow legged(i.e their legs are not straight) he is called ‘Al-Ahnaf’. So ‘Al-Hanaf’ is tilting.

Q: What is the relevance of this meaning of being a description to Ibraheem ‘Alyhe ssalaam?

A:  Because according to this meaning, it would result into saying that Ibraheem was tilted. This means, because he tilted away from polytheism (and whatever lead to it), by choosing Monotheism over it, heading to Allaah alone . And that is why in Interpretation of this world it says in Qur’aan , “ to worship none but Allaah”.  And this is Islamic or technical meaning of this word.

And in accordance to this: this religion is called Al Haneefiyyah. But this would result in us saying that this religion is tilted and that is not the description Allah gave it in Qur’aan! The answer to this is that Allah’s description of it being straight is its description in itself, but according to polytheism, it is tilted (i.e tilted away from it).

Al Bukhari narrated in Adab-Al-Muffradd that Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam was asked, Which of the religions are most loved to Allah?” He Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam said” Al Haneefiyaat-tus-Samha .

And also Hadeeth narrated in At-Tirmidhi: Hadeeth number 3793 according to Shaykh Al -Albani version because he separated the authentic Hadeeth from unauthentic. The Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam read this verse 1 of Surah Al Bayyinah. Then he said, The very true religion to Allah is Al Haneefiyyat-ul-Muslimah Lal Yahoodiyyah Wa Lal- Nassrabiyyah “ Yani the Haneefiyyah which is the Islaam. “Lal Yahoodiyyah Wa Lal- Nassrabiyyah” meaning Judaism neither Christianity.

One of the companions of the Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam who is ‘Abdullah Ibn-Yazeed Al Ansari. He said , “ Name yourself with what Allah has named you. With Haneefiyyah, And Islaam and Imaan.”

This Quote from Sahaabi negates and falsifies what people claim to be logical that only name applicable to us is Islaam. The greater thing is that many names it has so we are Al Muslimoon and we are also Al Honafa, Muhsinoon, Mu’minoon. And Allah gave us all those Names whether in His book or by His Prophet. So Qur’aan is not understood by itself but by the clarification or understanding of the Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam.
