Our teacher began with praising Allaah and sending salaat and salaam on the Messenger of Allaah, his family, companions and followers until the Last Day and began:
We finished speaking about Hanefiyyah and we said that Hanefiyyah is the religion of Islaam. It was called Al-Hanefiyyah because it is tilted away from polytheism – tilted away from from ascribing any partners with Allah in worship, tilted away from associating anyone with Allaah in submissiveness. Therefore, Al Haneef is the one who is tilted away from Ash-Shirk (Polytheism), tilted away from worshipping anyone with Allaah – heading towards submitting himself only to Allaah. This is what Al-Hanefiyyah means. And Allaah ordered the Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam as mentioned before in Surah number 16 verse 120-123 that he follows the religion of Ibraheem ‘Alyhe salaam.
The author says,
“Know may Allah guide you to obey Him that Al Hanefiyyah which is the religion (Mellah) of Ibraheem that you worship Allah alone while making this worship given solely to Him/Directed only to Him.”
- الدين has many meanings linguistically. Here the meaning is worshipping.
- ملّة also comes from many meanings in Qur’aan and one of them is the religion.
One might ask: “Is Islaam the religion of only Ibraheem? Or Islaam is the religion of all Prophets, from the first, Adam until the last of All Prophets, Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasalam?”
Answer: Because Islaam means surrendering linguistically “giving up” The word “أسلمة” ,means surrender something or gave up something. The Queen of Sheebah said in Soorah 27:44,
“She said: “My Lord! Verily, I have wronged myself, and I submit (in Islam, together with Sulaiman (Solomon), to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).”
This is what Islaam means, submitting and surrendering to Allah.
Allah also said in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:131 about what He said to Ibraheem,
“ When his Lord said to him, “Submit (اسلم )(i.e. be a Muslim)!” He said, “I have submitted myself (as a Muslim) to the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).”
Therefore if you understand this perspective then you understand that Islaam is the religion of all the Prophets that means that Aadam was Muslim and Nuh, Musa, ‘Esa were all Muslims and Ibraheem was Muslim and Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam was Muslim. They all submitted themselves to ALLAH. Allaah said about Musa who says to his people in Surah Yunus 10:84,
” And Musa (Moses) said: “O my people! If you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him if you are Muslims (those who submit to Allah’s Will).””.
Allah also mentions the du’aa of Ibraheem and his son Isma’eel in Surah Al Baqarah 2:128,
“”Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You….”
And it is known that the offspring of Ibraheem ‘Alyhe salaam are the messengers. Allah said that Ibraheem and Ismail asked Allaah to make them Muslim and of their offspring as well. We understand now that Islaam is the religion of all Prophets.
One might ask if Islaam is the religion of all Prophets than why did Allaah order Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam to follow the religion of Ibraheem. Because this order makes you feel as if the religion of Ibraheem is something different?
Answer: Ibraheem was only specified because Allaah made him an Imaam meaning a leader for people after him to follow. And this is the meaning of the word Ummah mentioned in Surah 2:124,
“And (remember) when the Lord of Ibrahim (Abraham) [i.e., Allah] tried him with (certain) Commands, which he fulfilled. He (Allah) said (to him), “Verily, I am going to make you a leader (Prophet) of mankind.” [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said, “And of my offspring (to make leaders).” (Allah) said, “My Covenant (Prophethood, etc.) includes not Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers).”
If someone is made a leader than the people should follow this leader. So, when I say follow the religion of your leader. Does this necessarily mean that the religion of the leaders before or people before is different? No, when we say “follow the religion of the leader” because he is your leader now. So, it’s like we are saying, “just as the one whom you follow (whom you take as leader) is upon this religion than you also follow your leader and be upon the same religion. Don’t tilt away to something else other than the true religion which this leader was upon.”
They were all leaders but regarding Ibraheem, he was made the leader for the people after him. Allah choose him as a grand leader for those who come after him. As Allah said in many verses of Qur’aan that’s why if you go to Surah An-Nisa 4: 54-55 Allah refuted the disbelievers,
“Or do they envy men (Muhammad and his followers) for what Allah has given them of His Bounty? Then We had already given the family of Ibrahim (Abraham) the Book and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah – Divine Inspiration to those Prophets not written in the form of a book), and conferred upon them a great kingdom. Of them were (some) who believed in him (Muhammad), and of them were (some) who averted their faces from him (Muhammad ); and enough is Hell for burning (them).
In Surah Al-Baqarah 2:253 Allah said:
“ Those Messengers! We preferred some to others;..”
Ibraheem was one of the most Prophets against shirk from his very youth, refuted his father and his people when he was just a boy. As Allaah said in Surah Al Anbiyaa’ 21:51-57,
And indeed We bestowed aforetime on Ibrâhim (Abraham) his (portion of) guidance, and We were Well-Acquainted with him (as to his Belief in the Oneness of Allâh). (51) When he said to his father and his people: “What are these images, to which you are devoted?” (52) They said:”We found our fathers worshipping them.” (53) He said: “Indeed you and your fathers have been in manifest error.” (54) They said: “Have you brought us the truth, or are you one of those who play about?” (55) He said: “Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them and to that I am one of the witnesses. (56) “And by Allâh, I shall plot a plan (to destroy) your idols after you have gone away and turned your backs.”
And Allaah said same story in Surah Maryam 19:41-43
And mention in the Book (the Qur’ân) Ibrâhim (Abraham). Verily! he was a man of truth, a Prophet. (41) When he said to his father: “O my father! Why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot avail you in anything? (42) “O my father! Verily! there has come to me of knowledge that which came not unto you. So follow me. I will guide you to a Straight Path
And Allah also said in Surah Al An`aam 6:74 – 75,
And (remember) when Ibrâhim (Abraham) said to his father Azar: “Do you take idols as âlihâh (gods)? Verily, I see you and your people in manifest error.” (74) Thus did we show Ibrâhim (Abraham) the kingdom of the heavens and the earth that he be one of those who have Faith with certainty
Allah exalted the mention of Ibraheem in Qur’aan because he had one of the strongest positions against shirk. He was by himself alone an Ummah, a nation who stood against his father and his people and broke idols by his own hands. And he severely forbids his people from staying upon what their forefathers were upon. Because of these positions and what Allah bestowed upon him, Ibraheem was made an Imam. A great leader and example for the ones after him to follow him. Allaah said Surah Az-Zukhraf 43:26-28,
And (remember) when Ibrahîm (Abraham) said to his father and his people: “Verily, I am innocent of what you worship, (26) “Except Him (i.e. but Allâh Alone I worship none) Who did create me, and verily, He will guide me.” (27) And he made it [i.e. Lâ ilâha ill-allâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh Alone)] a Word lasting among his offspring, that they may turn back (i.e. to repent to Allâh or receive admonition). “
Therefore, When Allah specifies in Qur’aan this religion being of Ibraheem ‘Alyhe salaam it doesn’t necessary mean negating that other prophets have the same religion…No, it is only because Ibraheem was made leader to the people after him and Allaah commanded the people after him to follow him. Islam means “surrendering” linguistically, and it means Islamically: “Surrendering and submitting yourself to Allah”. However after Allah sent His last messenger Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasalam and completed the religion, Islaam became only following the Prophet Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam. Allaah said in Surah Al-Maidah 5:3,
“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion…”
Allah choose Islaam to be complete and the last religion because when Allah sent Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam, then all the previous religions were abrogated by the revealing of this Quran and sending out of Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasalam. Allaah said in Surah Aal Imraan 3:85,
And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.”
Now Islaam became exclusively following the Prophet Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe because all the books before which sent down were corrupted by men as Allaah said in many verses like in Surah Aal Imraan 3:187,
(And remember) when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) to make it (the news of the coming of Prophet Muhammad and the religious knowledge) known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it, but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And indeed worst is that which they bought.
In same Surah verse 78 Allah said ,
And verily, among them is a party who distort the Book with their tongues (as they read), so that you may think it is from the Book, but it is not from the Book, and they say: “This is from Allah,” but it is not from Allah; and they speak a lie against Allah while they know it.
So, the Jews and the Christians have changed their religion by corrupting their own books which Allaah has sent down on their Prophets.
The relevance of two last verses mentioned is to clarify that: Since the books were messed with and changed by the corrupted by the hands of men then it is not to be depended as the religion of Allaah that is why when Allah send Prophet Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam this book Qur’aan was given what is in the previous scripture and even more to the point that Allaah perfected it. So now, true religion is following only Qur’aan which was sent only to this Prophet. Everything was made clear in the Qur’aan to the point when one reads it with no doubt that it is from Allaah. As Allaah said in SurahFussilat 41:42
“Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise.”
This is made evidence against he who claims that he is not upon clear understanding of what the true religion is. Allaah said in Surah Al-An`aam 6:154-157
Then, We gave Mûsa (Moses) the Book [the Taurât (Torah)], to complete (Our Favour) upon those who would do right, and explaining all things in detail and a guidance and a mercy that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord. (154) And this is a blessed Book (the Qur’ân) which We have sent down, so follow it and fear Allâh (i.e. do not disobey His Orders), that you may receive mercy (i.e. be saved from the torment of Hell). (155) Lest you (pagan Arabs) should say: “The Book was sent down only to two sects before us (the Jews and the Christians), and for our part, we were in fact unaware of what they studied.” (156) Or lest you (pagan Arabs) should say: “If only the Book had been sent down to us, we would surely have been better guided than they (Jews and Christians).” So now has come unto you a clear proof (the Qur’ân) from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy. Who then does more wrong than one who rejects the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh and turns away therefrom? We shall requite those who turn away from Our Ayât with an evil torment, because of their turning away (from them).
Allah described this book to be clear that means it is undeniable and self-evident and reading itself is a clear proof for anyone who is in doubt. What even cutsoff the argument of the stubborn that Allaah said in Surah An-Nisaa’ 4:165
Messengers as bearers of good news as well as of warning in order that mankind should have no plea against Allah after the Messengers. And Allah is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise
Allah sent out messengers who warn and also give glad tidings to the believers. Allah said that part of glad tidings is that messenger gave their people the news of coming of Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam. Allaah said that Musa gave his people the glad tidings of the coming of Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam and also ‘Eesa gave his people the glad tidings of the coming of Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam. Also Ibraheem asked Allaah to send out a messenger after him who is Prophet Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasalam rather Allaah mentioned in Qur’aan that he took the convent of all the Prophets and messengers since the beginning, until the end that they believed in Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam that he comes to them. Allaah said in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:129,
“Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own (and indeed Allah answered their invocation by sending Muhammad Peace be upon him ), who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Qur’an) and Al-Hikmah (full knowledge of the Islamic laws and jurisprudence or wisdom or Prophethood, etc.), and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.”
That is why Prophet Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam said that he is the da’wah of Ibraheem. Allah answered the prayer of Ibraheem and sent Prophet Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasalam . Allaah said in Surah Aal Imraan 3:81-83,
And (remember) when Allâh took the Covenant of the Prophets, saying: “Take whatever I gave you from the Book and Hikmah (understanding of the Laws of Allâh), and afterwards there will come to you a Messenger (Muhammad) confirming what is with you; you must, then, believe in him and help him.” Allâh said: “Do you agree (to it) and will you take up My Covenant (which I conclude with you)?” They said: “We agree.” He said: “Then bear witness; and I am with you among the witnesses (for this).” (81) Then whoever turns away after this, they are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious: those who turn away from Allâh’s Obedience). (82) Do they seek other than the religion of Allâh (the true Islâmic Monotheism worshipping none but Allâh Alone), while to Him submitted all creatures in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly. And to Him shall they all be returned. (83) Say (O Muhammad): “We believe in Allâh and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Ibrâhim (Abraham), Ismâ’il (Ishmael), Ishâq (Isaac), Ya’qûb (Jacob) and Al-Asbât [the offspring twelve sons of Ya’qûb (Jacob)] and what was given to Mûsa (Moses), ‘Īsā (Jesus) and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between one another among them and to Him (Allâh) we have submitted (in Islâm).”
This verse (2/82) proves that every messenger and Prophet gave gladtidings of the coming of Prophet Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam Allaah said in Surah Al-Araaf 7:155-157 about Musa ,
And Musa (Moses) chose out of his people seventy (of the best) men for Our appointed time and place of meeting, and when they were seized with a violent earthquake, he said: “O my Lord, if it had been Your Will, You could have destroyed them and me before; would You destroy us for the deeds of the foolish ones among us? It is only Your Trial by which You lead astray whom You will, and keep guided whom You will. You are our Wali (Protector), so forgive us and have Mercy on us, for You are the Best of those who forgive. (156) And ordain for us good in this world, and in the Hereafter. Certainly we have turned unto You.” He said: (As to) My Punishment I afflict therewith whom I will and My Mercy embraces all things. That (Mercy) I shall ordain for those who are the Muttaqun (pious – see V.2:2), and give Zakat; and those who believe in OurAyat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs and revelations, etc.); (157) Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e.Muhammad ) whom they find written with them in the Taurat (Torah) (Deut, xviii, 15) and the Injeel (Gospel) (John xiv, 16) , – he commands them for Al-Ma’ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained); and forbids them from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); he allows them as lawful At-Taiyibat [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khaba’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.), he releases them from their heavy burdens (of Allah’s Covenant), and from the fetters (bindings) that were upon them. So those who believe in him (Muhammad ), honour him, help him, and follow the light (the Qur’an) which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful .
Allah said about ‘Eesa giving this glad tiding in Surah Saff 61:6
“ And (remember) when ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: “O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed . But when he (Ahmed i.e. Muhammad ) came to them with clear proofs, they said: “This is plain magic.”
Now anyone don’t have excuse not to follow Prophet because if you claim to follow Musa and in the Taurah it is written this glad tiding and they didn’t follow Mohammad so they aren’t following the teachings of Musa. And also who claim to follow ‘Eesa , who gave the glad tidings of the coming of Prophet Muhammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam and not following Mohammad Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam is not following the teachings of ‘Eesa and that is why from this Prophet Sal Allaho ‘Alyhe wasaalam said which is narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhaari, “By the one in whose hands is my soul: Not a Jew or a Christian hears about me then doesn’t believe in that I have come with except that he is to be from the people of hellfire”.
