Meanings of بَابُ الإفعَال

أَفعَلَ – يُفعِلُ – إفعَالاً

First meaning:    التَّعدِيَة

كَرُمَتْ فَاطِمَةُFatimah was generous

سَمِعَ زَيدٌ القُرآنَ : Zayd heard the Quraan

رَأَيتُنَّ الحَدِيثَ : You all (f) saw the Hadeeth

  • The فِعل of رَأيتُنَّ is رَأَى and the ي is only there because it got silenced, so it went back to its original form – otherwise the verb alone is رَأَى

قَامُوا : They stood

جَلَسنَا عَلَى الأرضِ : We sat on the floor

شَمَّ الزَّهرَةَ : He smelled the rose

  • شَمَّ : He smelled

ضَلُّوا : They strayed

حَلَّ الأَكلُ : The food was permissible

رَجَعَتَا : They both (f) came back

Bringing the verbs on the scale of أفعَلَ with the meaning of التَّعدِية

أَكرَمتُ فَاطِمَةَ : I honored/good/generous  to Fatimah

أسمعَ زَيدٌ عَمرًا القُرآنَ : Zayd made ‘Amr hear the Quraan

  • Don’t say: أسمعتُ زَيدٌ عَمرًا القُرآنَ  – Here the ‘ تُ’ represents the فَاعِل – and technically there cannot be two Faa’ils for one فِعل

أَقَامُوا : They made ‘someone’ stand

أجلَسنَا عَلِيًّا عَلَى الأَرضِ : We made ‘Ali sit on the floor

أشمَمتُهُ : I made him smell

  • Here we unmerged, because laamul kalimah is silenced due to  تَاءُ الفَاعِل  being attached to it

أَضَلُّوا : They made go astray

  • Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا تَغْلُوا فِي دِينِكُمْ غَيْرَ الْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا أَهْوَاءَ قَوْمٍ قَدْ ضَلُّوا مِن قَبْلُ وَأَضَلُّوا كَثِيرًا وَضَلُّوا عَن سَوَاءِ السَّبِيلِ

Say (O Muhammad ): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Exceed not the limits in your religion (by believing in something) other than the truth, and do not follow the vain desires of people who went astray in times gone by, and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the Right Path.” [5:77]

أَحَلَّ اللهُ الأَكلَ: Allaah made the food permissible

  • Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 وَأَحَلَّ اللَّـهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا

,” whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba (usury)…. [2:275]

أَرجَعَتَاه: They both (f) brought him back

The second meaning : الدُّخُولُ في الشَّيءِ زَمَانَا أو مَكَانًا

الصُّبحُ : The day time

When you want to say that you have entered the morning, you bring it on the scale of أَفعَلَ

أَصبَحَ : He entered the day

  • هُوَ أصبَحَ
  • تُصبِحُ :You enter the day (the letter of the mudaari’ in four letter verb mazeed or mujarrad gets always a dhammah)
  • تُصبِحُونَ : All of you (m/mix) enter the morning day
  • Allaah سبحانه وتعالى  said:

 فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّـهِ حِينَ تُمْسُونَ وَحِينَ تُصْبِحُونَ

So glorify Allah [above all that (evil) they associate with Him (O believers)], when you come up to the evening [i.e. offer the (Maghrib) sunset and (‘Isha’) night prayers], and when you enter the morning [i.e offer the (Fajr) morning prayer]. [30:17]

Third meaning:  المُصَادَفَة

‘Coincidence’ – Finding the receiver upon a certain attribute

بُخْل : Stinginess

حَمْد : Praise

عَظَمَة : Greatness

غَفلَة : Heedlessness

  • Not being aware, like saying: أخَذَهُ عَلَى غَفلَة   He took him when he wasn’t aware  (it has the same meaning as heedlessness)

كِبَر : Big (greatness in bigness/size)

Allaah سبحانه وتعالى said:

 قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِي عَلَىٰ أَن مَّسَّنِيَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ

[Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: “Do you give me glad tidings (of a son) when old age has overtaken me? Of what then is your news?” [15:54]

  • كِبْر (with the sukoon on the baa) means ‘pride’ – As in Allaah saying:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي آيَاتِ اللَّـهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ أَتَاهُمْ إِن فِي صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَالِغِيهِ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّـهِ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ

Verily, those who dispute about the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, without any authority having come to them, there is nothing else in their breasts except pride [to accept you (Muhammad ) as a Messenger of Allah and to obey you]. They will never have it (i.e. Prophethood which Allah has bestowed upon you). So seek refuge in Allah (O Muhammad  from the arrogants). Verily, it is He Who is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. [40:56]

Bringing all of these مَصَادِر on the scale of أَفعَلَ

I found you stingy أَبخَلتُكَ

Hind found Maryam stingy:   أَبخَلَتْ هِندٌ مَريَمَ

  • Why أبخَلَتْ ? Because the doer ‘Hind’ is female
  • Why مَريَمَ and not مَريَمًا (with tanween)? It doesn’t except tanween because it is a feminine name

We found him praiseworthy : أَحمَدنَاهُ

I found her great: أَعظَمتُهَا

We found his heart heedless : أَغفَلنَا قَلبَهُ

The group of females found him great أكبَرنَهُ
