Translation of Text:

Husayn ibnu Ahmed ibnu Khaalawayh the grammatical  scholar, said: This is a book, in which I have mentioned the grammatical analysis of  30 suurahs of the Mufassal (from Qaaf to An-Naas, the last part of the Qur’aan),  by explaining the principles of each and every way of reading and abbreviating its  branches, and I mentioned in it the unfamiliar words of which were doubtful and its duality and plurality so it would be an aid on everything which you come across of the grammatical analysis of the Qur’aan, by the will of Allaah.  And our guidance is not except by Allaah.

Brief Notes:

In  today’s class we learnt the usage هذا and ذالك.
– هذا is used to point out to something that is near.
– ذالك is used to point out to something that is far.

Sometimes these are switched and that is for a benefit.  Allaah uses for that which is near, the one which points out to that which is far  as in the saying of Allaah in Suurah Al Baqarah 2:2-

ذَٰلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

This is the Book (the Qur’aan), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqun [the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)].

And the benefit in this is to express greatness –  to express that it is in a position which is high and deserves to be pointed out by that which points out to what is far.

We revised on the different meanings of في, and their examples:

  1. “in” (most common meaning)
  2. “on” (20/71)
  3. “because of” (Hadeeth about the woman and the cat which highlights the principle of how to treat animals)

We also studied إعراب could mean one of two things:

  1. An aparent or hidden trace which a factor brings to the end of the word or what took its ruling
  2. Gramatical Analysis

Ustaad Hafidhakallah further went on to interpret the passage and mentioned in it some benefits.  Including different reasons for the different modes of reading/recitation:
