ETP – Introduction to Arabic Studies – Sarf – Class 31

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Chapter two  التَّفعِيل >>>

فَعَّلَ – يُفَعِّلُ – تَفعِيلًا

The third meaning for which this Chapter is used:

النِّسبَةُ     “The Reference”

Referring the object (receiver) to the meaning the verb implies

Example:

sentences example fa''ala annisbah

الكَذِبُ       Lying

  • The root letters are: ك – ذ – ب

الكُفرُ        Disbelieving

  • The root letters are: ك – ف – ر

البِدعَةُ      Innovation

  • The root letters are: ب- د – ع

الفِسقُ      Rebellion

  • The root letters are: ف- س- ق

When referring/ascribing someone with the above mentioned words we build from those root letters a verb on the scale of فَعَّلَ

كَذَّبَتْ قَومُ نُوحٍ الـمُرسَلِينَ               The people of Nooh belied the messengers

As Allaah سبحانه وتعالى said:

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

The people of Nuh (Noah) belied the Messengers. [26:105]

The people of Nooh had only one messenger, but in the verse it says Al Mursaleen (plural), it is made plural because disbelieving in one messenger is disbelieving in the rest of messengers, because they all had one message which is At Tawheed (calling to worshipping Allaah alone), so if you belie one you belie in all. That is why one of the reasons the Christians and the Jews can’t be considered believers, but the main reason is that they have fallen into shirk. We can’t call the disbelievers believers this is bellying the Quraan, contradicting Allaahs words, because Allaah سبجانه تعالى said:

Surely, in disbelief are they who say that Allah is the Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary). Say (O Muhammad SAW): “Who then has the least power against Allah, if He were to destroy the Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), his mother, and all those who are on the earth together?” And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them. He creates what He wills. And Allah is Able to do all things. [5:17]

  • They referred them to lying, as Allaah سبحانه وتعالى said about them:

قَالَ الْمَلَأُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِن قَوْمِهِ إِنَّا لَنَرَاكَ فِي سَفَاهَةٍ وَإِنَّا لَنَظُنُّكَ مِنَ الْكَاذِبِينَ

The leaders of those who disbelieved among his people said: “Verily, we see you in foolishness, and verily, we think you are one of the liars.”  [7:66]

كَفَّرَ العُلَمَاءُ الـجَهمِيَّةَ     The Scholars deemed the Jahmiyyah disbelievers

  • Meaning, they referred the Jahmiyyah to disbelieve
  • Al Jahmiyyah are those who say that Allaah has no Names no Attributes, and they are called Al Jahmiyyah, because they are referred to Al Jahmu bnu Safwaan.

بَدَّعَ أَهلُ السُنَّةِ الأَشَاعِرَ      The people of the Sunnah deemed the Ash’arees to innovation

  • The Ashaa’irah are the followers of what Abul Hasan Al ash’ariyy used to be upon, walhamdullilaah he left his misguidance and returned to the Sunnah in general, but his followers stayed upon the misguidance which he left.

فَسَّقَ اللهُ القَاذِفُونَ     Allaah deemed the slanders rebellious

The fourth meaning for which this Chapter is used:

اِختِصَارُ حِكَايَةِ الـمُرَكَّبِ    “Abbreviating spoken phrases”

examples sentences fa''ala ikhtisaar

They take from those phrases 3 letters and bring it on the scale of فَعَّلَ

قَالَ زَيدٌ سُبحَانَ اللهِ

  • They took the س – ب – ح

قَالَ عَمرٌو لَا إِلهَ إِلَّا الله

  • They took the هـ – ل – ل

قَالَ خَالِدٌ اللهُ أَكبَرُ

  • They took the ك – ب- ر

قَالَ الحَاجُّ لَبَيكَ اللهُمَّ لَبَيك

  • They took the ل – ب – ي

قَالَ أَخِي السَّلَامُ عَلَيكُم وَرَحمةُ اللهِ وبَرَكَاتُهُ

  • They took the س – ل- م
